With Gamescom barely in the rearview mirror and PAX West zooming toward us, it’s a hectic time for indies. And, honestly, in the chaos and excitement, overlooking wonderful experiences is almost a guarantee. So, to help highlight games releasing in this wild time, I’m breaking down three titles to put on your radar below.

Don Duality
Don Duality puts a fedora on your head, a gun in your hand, and the keys to your very own restaurant on the table for the taking. Its developers call it a “chaos manager” game, which is a fairly apt description. You can read about my experience with the game here, but, as a TLDR, you can expect to keep the catch of the day flying out to hungry customers if you want to avoid swimming with them.

Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate
This might be quite a shock, so make sure you’re sitting before reading on. I like chess. I learned to play fairly young and, though I’m not great at it, still keep a board to play on. So, hearing the noble game of strategy got a console release with shotguns and roguelike elements was too irresistible to pass up. Shotgun King is a wonderful blend of ridiculous and challenge.

Virgo Versus The Zodiac
Making its way onto PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch after its original release on PC in 2019, Virgo Versus The Zodiac is a game you’ll want to pick up if you managed to miss its initial launch. A JRPG, the game is a mixture of alluring parts. It delves into sci-fi and fantasy. Features pixel and hand-drawn art — both of which are fabulous. And offers turn-based combat with real-time action.
